Part task training
Braking in a race car is a crucially important skill and drivers with good brake performance will generally be faster though the rest of the corner. To become an expert or perform your best in any sport you need to train. At the right time you need to receive accurate and precise feedback on performance.
For braking during race car driving, there is a lot going on when you apply the brakes at high speed and it’s difficult to focus just on braking or improving brake pressure modulation. The brake trainer removes all disturbances so the driver can focus on the brake application.
The brake trainer software offers different levels of feedback-on-performance. It is critically important not to get dependent on the feedback you receive during training, because this feedback will not be present while driving the real car.
Braking starts with an open-loop application of brake pressure, which must be done with exactly the right pressure (on the verge of locking wheels) and at exactly the right point on track. From here, both muscle memory and actual driving skill are required to modulate the brake pressure and enter the corner. The brake trainer can help train the timing, the open-loop brake application, and the muscle memory on release. It gives the driver a foundation to build on.
The Brake trainer set consists of two parts: 1) a software program that runs on a computer and requires a program specific dongle, and 2) a hardware interface to communicate with the brake and throttle sensors of a car. If you use the brake trainer on a driving simulator, the pedals are already connected to the computer and the software and dongle are the only elements required to use the brake trainer.
Software
The software allows to train any required brake and throttle shape. The software is very adaptable, and you can either design brake shapes from scratch, or use data that comes straight from the race car.
Many elements of the training program can be adapted and customized. The most important program features are the Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 training programs. From Level 1 to Level 2 the preview element is removed. From Level 2 to Level 3 the momentary input and output feedback is removed. On top of the levels, a randomised magnitude variation of the brake peak pressure can be introduced. All these elements can be used to improve brake control and master brake skill.
To motivate the driver, and guide him to higher performance, a performance feedback score is provided. This feedback score can be supplied after every brake application, or as the average of several brake applications.
Hardware
The hardware consists of a USB interface that connects a car’s brake and throttle sensors to the computer that runs the brake trainer software. Because different cars use different brake pressure and throttle sensor connectors, we supply the brake trainer device with open-ended wires. We can provide installed custom connectors upon request at extra cost.
Data output
The software has the option of producing data which can be imported and reviewed with all common data-visualisation programs like Bosch WinDarab or WinTax.
